GSL Extension
A Chrome extension that adds mutual connections, local tags, private notes and a watchlist directly to GitHub profiles.
Overview
I'm building GSL Extension as a study project around browser extensions, local-first UX and GitHub's public API. The extension injects a discreet social layer into GitHub profile pages, showing public profile signals, mutual connections, local tags, private notes and a watchlist without a backend, account or analytics.
What problem does the extension address?
GitHub profiles contain useful public information, but they do not preserve the personal context someone builds while discovering developers and repositories. GSL Extension brings that context into the profile itself, reducing the need for a separate spreadsheet or note-taking workflow when following people and potential collaborators.
How does the local-first approach work?
The extension reads public profile signals through GitHub's API and stores private organization data in the browser. Tags, notes and the watchlist do not require a GSL account or application backend. This keeps the product lightweight and makes the boundary between public GitHub data and private user context explicit.
Which engineering decisions shape the project?
The interface is built with TypeScript and React and must coexist with GitHub's own profile UI. That requires careful content-script behavior, stable component mounting and graceful handling of unavailable API data. Avoiding analytics and a remote database also reduces infrastructure, while making cross-device synchronization an intentional trade-off.
What is the project exploring?
GSL Extension is an active study in browser-extension architecture, API boundaries and unobtrusive interface design. The goal is to learn how a small local tool can add useful workflow context to an established product without trying to replace it or collecting information that the feature does not need.
